UAW and Ford Motor Co. were awarded an interim employment contract late Wednesday, according to the union. The union turned to Ford to negotiate a new four-year contract after last week ratifying a contract with GM following a 40-day U.S. strike that ended almost all of GM`s Operations in North America. It`s a kind of gift and take type of situation, and Ford still gets some gains on its own. The ratified agreement gives Ford full power to close the Romeo engine plant in Michigan, which will lose 600 jobs in the region but move elsewhere. The automaker said the move would help it make better use of its capacity in the drive plant. There is also the possibility of increasing the use of temporary workers and a new retirement platform to contain the cost of labour. Finally, there is no increase in payments to workers` pensions.
“Our national negotiators, elected by their local unions, voted unanimously to recommend the proposed interim agreement to the UAW-Ford National Council,” Gamble said in a prepared statement issued shortly before 9 p.m. .m. “During the General Motors strike, our negotiating team worked hard to maintain productive negotiations with Ford. The typical bargaining strategy has been a very effective approach for the UAW and its members to ensure economic profits in terms of salary, benefits and to secure more than $6 billion in significant product investments in U.S. facilities, creating and maintaining more than 8,500 jobs for our communities. The United Automobile Workers union announced on Friday that the agreement had been supported by 56% of voters. Negotiating teams around Rory Gamble, vice president of ford`s UAW department, and Bill Dirksen, Ford`s vice president of labor affairs, quickly reached an agreement after “seriously” starting the discussion on economic issues on Monday. Contract negotiations with the Detroit Three moved to Ford after GM workers, who were on strike for six weeks, ratified their contracts friday. DETROIT (Reuters) – Ford Motor F.N and the United Auto Workers union on Wednesday announced an interim agreement for a new employment contract, which provides for it in the NR. 2 of the U.S.
automaker avoids a strike like the one that cost its biggest rival Gm General Motors. N about $3 billion. The ratification gives union leaders a boost when they try to conclude negotiations in Detroit and then turn to Fiat Chrysler Automobiles NV , the last of the U.S. automakers to negotiate a new labor agreement with the UAW. Contrary to the fireworks that became the labor negotiations of the UAW-General Motors, the automobile union and Ford agreed quickly and non-artistically. After reaching an interim agreement earlier this month, the UAW voted last Friday to 56.3% in favour of ratifying the agreement. A simple majority is all that is needed to ratify a labour agreement. Union workers have approved a four-year contract with Ford Motor that accepts pay increases and other conditions almost identical to the agreement with General Motors.
